Locating underground assets Before You Dig
If you're planning any type of excavation, it is important to be aware of possible hazards and/or valuable assets within your proposed work site.
To ensure the safety of North East Water’s assets and the success of your project, please follow the steps below before commencing any works:
Step 1: Submit a BYDA Inquiry
Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) is a national service that provides information about underground pipes, cables, and other infrastructure. Your inquiry will be referred to relevant utilities—including communications, electricity, gas, and water providers—and you’ll receive plans showing the location of underground services within a few business days.
How to lodge an inquiry?
Visit byda.com.au to lodge your inquiry.
Step 2: Engage a Qualified Locator
If the plans provided by BYDA do not offer sufficient detail to safely guide your work or confirm the location of North East Water’s assets, you are advised to engage a qualified third-party locator.
Important: Contractors working near our infrastructure are responsible for verifying asset locations before commencing work. North East Water does not currently provide asset location services.
